Processing Mode Causally Influences Emotional Reactivity
نویسندگان
چکیده
Three studies are reported showing that emotional responses to stress can be modified by systematic prior practice in adopting particular processing modes. Participants were induced to think about positive and negative scenarios in a mode either characteristic of or inconsistent with the abstract-evaluative mind-set observed in depressive rumination, via explicit instructions (Experiments 1 and 2) and via implicit induction of interpretative biases (Experiment 3), before being exposed to a failure experience. In all three studies, participants trained into the mode antithetical to depressive rumination demonstrated less emotional reactivity following failure than participants trained into the mode consistent with depressive rumination. These findings provide evidence consistent with the hypothesis that processing mode modifies emotional reactivity and support the processing-mode theory of rumination.

متن کاملPreconscious Processing Biases Predict Emotional Reactivity to Stress
BACKGROUND Anxiety vulnerability is associated with biases in attention: a tendency to selectively process negative relative to neutral or positive information. It is not clear whether this bias is: 1) related to the physiological response to stressful events, and 2) causally related to the development of anxiety disorders. METHODS We tested the predictive value of both preconscious and consc...
متن کاملEnhanced amygdala reactivity to emotional faces in adults reporting childhood emotional maltreatment.
In the context of chronic childhood emotional maltreatment (CEM; emotional abuse and/or neglect), adequately responding to facial expressions is an important skill. Over time, however, this adaptive response may lead to a persistent vigilance for emotional facial expressions. The amygdala and the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) are key regions in face processing. However, the neurobiological co...

Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of emotion regulation strategies of cognitive appraisal and emotional suppression on autonomic nervous reactions based on high and low sensory processing sensitivity among students. Methods For this purpose, 500 students of Bu Ali Sina University of Hamadan were selected through a stratified sampling approach. Based on final score dis...
متن کاملThe trade-offs of emotional reactivity for youths' social information processing in the context of maternal depression
Although research demonstrates that emotional experiences can influence cognitive processing, little is known about individual differences in this association, particularly in youth. The present study examined how the emotional backdrop of the caregiving environment, as reflected in exposure to maternal depression and anxiety, was linked to biases in youths' cognitive processing of mother-refer...
